WHAT IS COORDINATED BARGAINING?
Coordinated bargaining increases workers’ power to win by getting rank and file members across different locals, or even across different unions, to take action together. Coordinated bargaining is all about solidarity. It tells the boss that it doesn’t matter what union we’re in, we have each others’ backs. Examples of coordinated bargaining and national contract wins:
In 2024, 14,000 workers at California Disney coordinated across UFCW Local 324, BCTGM Local 83, SEIU-USWW, and IBT Local 495 to win $6 in wage increases and $24/hour starting pay — a 31% raise!
In 2023, 340,000 Teamsters fought for a national contract at UPS. The Teamsters passed a resolution in 2021 committing to coordinated bargaining, stating, “corporations take advantage of multiple individual bargaining units to bring down industry standards.” They won $7.50 raises, $21 starting pay for part-timers, and end to two-tier, and more.
In 2023, the UAW Stand-Up Strike against the Big Three Automakers covered 150,000 workers at three employers. They ended wage tiers and won $10 raises. Some workers saw up to 88% raises.
Unions across the country are getting on board with coordinated bargaining. It’s time the UFCW catches up.
BIGGER BARGAINING, BETTER CONTRACTS
We’ve seen that workers win more when members take action together. Coalitions and coordination in previous contracts have won higher wages and smaller wage steps than those bargained alone. UFCW Local 7 in Colorado is the first to bargain a major grocery contract in 2025. The contract they bargain sets the stage for all other major grocery contracts.
Right now, the UFCW doesn’t have a master grocery contract for the 700,000 members at Kroger and Albertsons stores. Instead, we have hundreds of contracts with all sorts of different contract language. When we’re divided across contracts and locals, our ability to unite workers on the shop floor is weaker.
EW4D’s vision for coordinated bargaining doesn’t stop there. We want to build towards a national master agreement covering all 700,000 grocery workers at Kroger and Albertsons. Regional differences, including cost of living adjustments (COLA), can still be taken into account with a national master agreement. The main difference is that when we bargain and take action together, we have more power against the bosses.
