Subpar Kroger Contract Offer Leads UFCW Local 7 Members To Take Strike Authorization Votes

King Soopers workers in Colorado have been working under an expired contract since January 16th, 2025.
After receiving a last, best, and final offer from Kroger that failed to meet workers’ needs, workers are voting to authorize a strike. If a majority of workers vote to strike, King Soopers workers could be on the picket line as early as next week.
In a video posted by UFCW Local 7 on YouTube and Facebook, UFCW Local 7 President Kim Cordova states that the company’s proposal did not address the needs of workers, including top issues like:
Understaffing
Store safety
Two-tier discrimination
Seniority protections
Shorter wage steps and more paths to full-time work
Protection from automation
The company’s offer included abysmal wage increases, with thousands of workers offered less than $0.25 or less in the first year of the contract.
It also included more outsourcing to vendors and gig workers, an end to Select-a-Shift for part-timers, and an end to seniority-based scheduling for non-management workers.
It would also create a two-tier system that would bar future employees from daily overtime — a more than $2,000 annual pay cut for those working over 8.5 hours a day. Proposed cuts to the healthcare plan would take $7 million out of workers’ health plans, which could lead to price increases or decreases in benefits.

Kroger made $828 million in operating profits in the third quarter of 2024 alone. By September 2024, Kroger had made $1.4 billion in earnings — almost double its year-to-date earnings the year before.
