UFCW Local 7 Announces Two-Week ULP Strike at King Soopers

Ten thousand members of UFCW Local 7 will be on Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike at 77 King Soopers locations across Colorado. The two-week strike will start at 5 AM on Thursday, February 6th.

Ten thousand members of UFCW Local 7 will be on strike at 77 King Soopers locations across Colorado. The two-week Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike will start at 5 AM on Thursday, February 6th. King Soopers workers in Colorado have been working under an expired contract since January 16th, 2025. 

The strike will affect Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, and Jefferson counties, as well as the cities of Boulder and Louisville. Workers in these locations voted to authorize a strike by 96%.

Kroger has committed several unfair labor practices, including:

  • Targeting workers

  • Refusing to negotiate the contract fairly (bad faith bargaining)

  • Refusing to provide information to the union

  • Interfering with negotiations

Kroger committed unfair labor practices during workers’ attempts to bargain a fair contract. In a video posted by UFCW Local 7 on YouTube and Facebook, UFCW Local 7 President Kim Cordova states that the company’s last, best, and final proposal did not address the needs of workers, including top issues like: 

  • Understaffing 

  • Store safety 

  • Two-tier discrimination

  • Seniority protections

  • Shorter wage steps and more paths to full-time work

  • Protection from automation

Kroger made $828 million in operating profits in the third quarter of 2024 alone. By September 2024, Kroger had made $1.4 billion in earnings — almost double its year-to-date earnings the year before. 

The contract bargained by UFCW Local 7 is the first of several grocery contracts expiring in 2025. The contract they bargain sets the stage for what workers in other locals can win.
