What’s this tracker for?

We don’t just want to win a better contract at one store. We want to win higher wages, better working conditions, and dignity for every grocery worker. How do we do that? By bargaining big.

Bargaining big is a simple concept. It’s all about making the bargaining table bigger so workers have more leverage.

Right now, the UFCW doesn’t have a master grocery contract for the hundreds of thousands of grocery workers it represents. Instead, we have hundreds of contracts with all sorts of different contract language. That makes it hard for us to stand united against the boss. 

Take a look at how many grocery stores in the country are owned by Kroger and Albertsons alone.

Imagine if all of those stores were bargaining at the same time for the same contract, telling the bosses, “If we don’t get the contract we deserve, we’re walking.” Now that’s worker power!

How do we bargain big?

At the local level, bargaining big starts with you. Get informed on the contracts in your area that are expiring, and try to meet workers covered by those contracts. Talk to your union representative and contract bargaining committee about organizing with other locals near you. And get in touch with an EW4D organizer for more information. 

At the international level, EW4D is fighting for reforms to our union at the top to help us organize at the grassroots. We’re calling on the UFCW international to invest in organizing and the UFCW strike fund. We’re also pushing for more coordination and solidarity with our grocery union brothers and sisters in the Teamsters, BCTGM, and more.
