2 Million SEIU Members Rejoin AFL-CIO

On Wednesday, January 8th, the two million member-strong Service Employees International Union (SEIU) announced it would be rejoining the AFL-CIO. This will bring the AFL-CIO to nearly 15 million members across the country.

“CEOs and billionaires want nothing more than to see workers divided, but we're standing here today with greater solidarity than ever to reach the 60 million Americans who say they’d join a union tomorrow if the laws allowed and to unrig our labor laws to guarantee every worker in America the basic right to organize on the job,” said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler

We commend and celebrate the effort to bolster organized labor’s collective strength through solidarity. Just as we have called for greater coordination among unions at the bargaining table, we believe that we are stronger when we’re united.

We also believe that we are stronger when our labor unions are democratic and committed to organizing.

We hope that the reaffiliation of SEIU with the AFL-CIO will reenergize the call for all AFL-CIO affiliated unions to commit to organizing the unorganized, and providing the resources and tools necessary to new and existing union members to win strong contracts.
