Know your rights on the picket line! With a bogus restraining order filed by King Soopers against its own workers, make sure you know the facts about your rights on the picket line and how to defend them.
You have the right to:
Have a heater
Have a portable speaker/boombox
Management may ask you to move the speaker away from the doors. Please comply with their request as long as it is within reason.
Set up tables
Picket in large groups
Stand near the front doors
Chant/shout pro-union chants
Eat food
Talk to customers about not crossing the picket line
Talk to drivers of delivery trucks at the receiving docks and ask them not to cross the picket line
Many union delivery drivers, who are often members of Teamsters Local 455, have a contractually protected right not to cross the picket line without facing discipline from their employer.
KING SOOPERS ATTEMPTS TO SHUT DOWN WORKER FREE SPEECH
On Tuesday, King Soopers filed a temporary restraining order (TRO) against Local 7 in an attempt to stop workers from picketing outside their stores. The restraining order will be heard by a judge today, Feb. 13th at 1 PM, after having been postponed yesterday when the company delayed producing evidence.
“This is just the corporation’s second attempt to use its money as a weapon to break our strike,” said UFCW Local 7 President Kim Cordova.
To be clear: as of Thursday, Feb. 13th, the restraining order has not yet been granted and is not in effect. Nothing has changed with regards to your legal right to be on the picket line. Stay tuned for more updates from Local 7.
Management is trying to intimidate workers and stifle worker power on the picket line. The good news: the strike is working! Workers on strike are successfully disrupting business as usual for King Soopers, and management is doing everything they can to shut down our power and numbers. They are resulting to bogus legal tactics instead of providing the union with key information and bargaining in good faith. King Soopers is losing business, and they are scared.
These are the same tricks they used in 2022. Workers won then, and workers will win again this year if we stick together!
