King Soopers UFCW members in Denver, CO kicked off Solidarity Saturdays last week by wearing red to show management we're STILL ready to fight for the contract we deserve.
At our March EW4D workshop in Denver, Tyler, a UPS Teamster, shared how he organized to reinstate a wrongfully terminated coworker. One tactic was wearing red and walking in to work together at the same time.
After this meeting, Kylirae, a shop steward in Westminster, immediately got to work talking to her coworkers about starting Solidarity Saturdays. Just 6 days later, they pulled off their first of many!
Want to start Solidarity Saturdays (or other shows of solidarity) at your store? Here are some tips to help you get started.
Tips for organizing Solidarity Saturdays
Start early. Try to give everyone a head’s up well in advance, so people have time to plan.
Give reminders. Even if you talked to someone once doesn’t mean they’ll remember on the day-of. Consider sending them a text reminder, or reminding them the day before at work.
Start a group chat. Use the chat to send updates, photos in red t-shirts, and hype each other up to keep Solidarity Saturdays going.
Take pictures. Designate at least one person to take photos — but the more people you can get involved in collecting photos, the. better!
